Retrobrighting the ADDS 1010 keyboard

The other day I added some notes about the ADDS 1010 terminal. But as can be seen in the photos, the keyboard was very yellowed.

I saw some video where someone suggested to cover the bottom with tape so the keys can be stuck to the tape from the bottom

And after some time, i stuck most of the keys like this

The yellowing is very apparent against the white background!

After that, I covered the keys with some strong peroxide I have. it’s pool grade, but it’s a couple of years old so it lost some strength. It’s certainly not as strong as it was when it was new.

Some cling wrap and out in the sun it goes.

In the end, it wasn’t a great idea. Or I executed it poorly. The keys didn’t really stick to the tape, and also the tape itself was floating. Oh well. But when I checked the progress, the keys had cleared up significantly. So i decided to remove the tape, and throw in the rest of the keys.

I also put a mirror below to try to reflect more sun. I’m not really sure how effective this was.

After a couple of hours, it’s time to fish out and rinse the keys.

And pat them dry with a towel…

And after a few minutes putting them all back in, this is the final result

For comparison, this is how it used to look

I’d say this is a pretty solid improvement!

Bonus: A500 keycaps too
